Welcome to Dolphins Class!!

“Welcome to Dolphins Class! We are an energetic, happy class of 11 pupils and 7 adults. We learn through play and all learning is very much interlinked. We follow the pupil’s interests and aim to prove enriching, meaningful learning experiences every day.

We spend a lot of time exploring different therapies based on our pupil’s needs, for example, speech and language therapy, hydrotherapy, sensory enrichment, physiotherapy, and PECs Club.

We have lots of fun in Dolphins Class!”

Communication and LiteracyWe will be starting and learning a new story this half term. Our story will be ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. We will immerse ourselves in the story through lots of activities including sensory and tactile story sacks. We will link our core vocabulary sessions to the story and will focus on the words ‘more’ and ‘finished’ this half term as well as learning to express “I want…” and “I like…” We will continue to work on our communication PLG and SaLT targets as well as read with an adult each week. You can read with me and sing with me throughout the week. I may start to learn some new songs, new actions or new signing. Giving me lots of opportunities and reasons to communicate can help me develop my vocabulary and understanding. We use Signalong at school – if you would like more information please contact the school office.
Mathematics and Problem SolvingIn our problem solving/maths sessions this half term we will look at numbers 1-5. We will be linking number to quantity, identify a specific number from a larger group and look at more and less. We will also sing lots of number songs to reinforce our learning of number. We will start to look at days of the week and add a days of the week song into our morning routine. You can count with me in everyday situations such as getting dressed – 1 arm, 2 arms, 1 leg 2 legs etc. We can count dinner items on my plate or how many squares we cut my toast into at breakfast! We can talk about what day of the week it is and if it is a school day or a home day. Becky will send a sheet home to help with this.
Personal Development We will continue our Good Morning routine with our good morning song, choosing our feelings, attention autism and teeth brushing as well as adding in our days of the week song. In the afternoon we will sing good afternoon to each other and look at how we are feeling. We will continue to use our Zones of Regulation to identify our feelings throughout the day. Please continue to talk to me about my feelings in the moment, you can use the scripting “I can see you are…, I think you may be feeling….” Becky will send home some information about this and the Zones of Regulation we use within school.
Physical DevelopmentWe will have lots of time throughout the week to be physically active – in the Playground, in the Woodland Area and in the Ball Pool. We will continue our daily fine motor activities and this half term we will be starting our dough disco sessions. We will continue to have lots of sensory play. I am so busy and active but I am also learning when my body needs to stop, rest, focus and regulate. If you need any information on sensory circuits then please ask.
Understanding the WorldHannah will continue to teach us on a Wednesday morning. As the weather improves we will start to use the woodland area again. Hannah will be focusing on the lifecycle of a butterfly. In the afternoon we will be looking at the fruit of the week linked to the hungry caterpillar story. We will be able to look at, touch, smell and even taste the fruits if we want to. As spring starts to appear we can notice and look at how things are changing, the leaves on the tress, the flowers and also notice the sun getting warmer. We may be able to find some bugs outside – maybe even a caterpillar! We can explore different fruit and foods at home, looking at, touching, smelling, squeezing, crunching it and maybe even a lick or taste!
Expression and CreativityMusic, art and craft will continue to be at the forefront of our play and exploration as well as sensory and messy play. In Art this half term we will focus on colour and pattern, using different objects to print and mark make with. We will continue to explore music and each week we will focus on a different instrument. What colours can we see at home? We could go on a colour hunt to find different colours or find out how many blue or yellow things we can find!
Personalised Learning We will continue to work on our personalised learning goals and we will continue to support the children in accessing the sensory input and exercises they need. If you have any worries, queries or concerns then please contact Becky. Please use the orange home school diary to communicate with the class team. It has been great to see some lovely home entries on EfL and to see your comments on the observations we upload. Thank you!
