Welcome to Dolphins Class!!

“Welcome to Dolphins Class! We are an energetic, happy class of 11 pupils and 7 adults. We learn through play and all learning is very much interlinked. We follow the pupil’s interests and aim to prove enriching, meaningful learning experiences every day.

We spend a lot of time exploring different therapies based on our pupil’s needs, for example, speech and language therapy, hydrotherapy, sensory enrichment, physiotherapy, and PECs Club.

We have lots of fun in Dolphins Class!”

Communication and LiteracyWe will be starting and learning a new story this half term. Our story will be We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. We will immerse ourselves in the story, learning about the different settings before ‘writing’ the story and learning some signs to help us tell it. We will then move on to innovate our own stories based on the book. We will continue to work on our communication PLG and SaLT targets as well as read with an adult each week. You can read with me and sing with me throughout the week. I may start to learn some new songs, new actions or new signing. Giving me lots of opportunities and reasons to communicate can help me develop my vocabulary and understanding. We use Signalong at school – if you would like more information please contact the school office.
Mathematics and Problem SolvingIn our problem solving/maths sessions we will look at positional language and directions. We will use journeys, paths, and maps to help develop our understanding and add context to our learning. We will have activities that support the schema’s of transporting, rotation, tracking and connecting. You can talk about the routes we take in our week. Do we go over or under a bridge? Do we go through a tunnel? Do we go up, down, forward or back? I may like to make tracks for trains or cars or other toys I have at home.
Personal Development We will continue to build on our routines and this half term we will be extending our morning routine to add in attention autism and some song and rhyme time. We will continue to use our Zones of Regulation and start to think about how we feel in the morning and in the afternoon registration time. Please continue to talk to me about my feelings in the moment, you can use the scripting “I can see you are…, I think you may be feeling….” Becky will send home some information about this and the Zones of Regulation we use within school.
Physical DevelopmentWe will have lots of time throughout the week to be physically active – in the Playground, in the Woodland Area and in the Ball Pool. We will continue our daily fine motor activities and sensory play. I am so busy and active but I am also learning when my body needs to stop, rest, focus and regulate. If you need any information on sensory circuits then please ask.
Understanding the WorldHannah will continue to teach us on a Wednesday morning. Whilst the weather is cold and wet we will do some baking in class as well as explore nature trays linked to our story. We will be looking at different settings each week; grass, river, mud, forest, snow, caves. We can look at the weather each day and see if I need to wear my hat and gloves as well as my coat! If we are out and about or in the garden we can talk about the different things we can see – grass, mud, sticks, and stones. We may even get to play in some snow!
Expression and CreativityMusic, art and craft will continue to be at the forefront of our play and exploration as well as sensory and messy play. In Art this half term we will focus on texture. We will explore music each Wednesday afternoon, learning how to create music on different instruments, learning to tap our rhythm sticks and learning to start and stop! We could go on a texture hunt at home, can we find things that are rough, smooth, hard, soft, or bumpy.
Personalised Learning We will continue to work on our personalised learning goals and we will continue to support the children in accessing the sensory input and exercises they need. If you have any worries, queries or concerns then please contact Becky. Please use the orange home school diary to communicate with the class team. It has been great to see some lovely home entries on EfL and to see your comments on the observations we upload. Thank you!
